Materials and quality: what to know

The materials in your mouth affect how the work looks, lasts and can be repaired. You do not need to be an expert — but knowing the main options helps you read a quote, ask the right questions and confirm you are getting genuine, documented materials.

Genuine and documented beats a brand name alone. The aim is not to demand the most expensive material, but to confirm the material is appropriate for your case, genuine, regulated, and recorded so it can be matched or repaired later.

CAD/CAM and how work is made

Many modern clinics use CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) to design and mill crowns, veneers and bridges digitally, and some offer same-day restorations. This can improve precision and fit. Digital smile design can also help you preview cosmetic results. These are tools, not guarantees — good planning and execution still matter more than any machine.

What material is best for dental crowns and veneers?

There is no single best material for every situation. Zirconia is very strong and suits back teeth and heavy-bite or full-arch work; lithium disilicate (e.max) offers excellent aesthetics for veneers and front crowns; traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal is durable but can show a dark gum line over time; and composite is cheaper and more reversible but less durable. The right choice depends on the tooth, the bite, aesthetics and how much natural tooth is involved.

What is e.max and when is it used?

E.max is a brand of lithium disilicate ceramic known for strong aesthetics and translucency, which makes it popular for veneers and crowns on visible front teeth. It is strong enough for many applications while looking natural. For back teeth or heavy-bite and full-arch cases, zirconia is often preferred for its greater strength, so the material is usually chosen tooth by tooth.

Are titanium implants safe, and what about zirconia implants?

Titanium has been the standard implant material for decades, is highly biocompatible and has a very large evidence base. Zirconia implants are a metal-free, tooth-coloured alternative used in some cases, for example where a patient prefers no metal, but they have a smaller though growing body of evidence. For most patients the specific brand, model and quality of surgical planning matter more than the choice between grades of titanium.

How do I know the materials used are genuine?

Ask the clinic to name the exact material and brand for each part of your treatment in writing, confirm it is genuine and regulated (for example CE-marked) and from a reputable manufacturer or lab, and ensure it is recorded on your treatment notes. Genuine documented materials are also usually a condition of any guarantee, and good records let a future dentist match or repair the work if needed.

Does CAD/CAM or same-day dentistry mean better quality?

CAD/CAM can improve the precision and fit of crowns, veneers and bridges and enables same-day restorations in some clinics, and digital smile design can help preview cosmetic results. But these are tools, not guarantees. The skill of the dentist, honest case selection and good planning still matter more than any particular machine, so judge the whole approach rather than the technology alone.

Why does it matter how much natural tooth is removed?

Because removing natural tooth structure for crowns or veneers is irreversible and, if excessive, can cause sensitivity, nerve problems and a future need for root canals. Some materials require more preparation than others, so ask how much tooth will be removed and whether a more conservative material or approach is possible. Preserving healthy tooth structure is itself an important quality and safety consideration.
