What CAD/CAM means
CAD is the software the dentist or technician uses to design a restoration on screen. CAM is the machine — usually a mill — that manufactures it from a solid block of ceramic. Together they replace the older route of putty impressions posted to a lab and a crown returned a week or two later. When the whole chain sits inside one clinic, it becomes possible to scan, design and fit a restoration in a single appointment: the "same-day crown".
The same-day workflow, step by step

The materials behind it
Same-day restorations are milled from proven ceramic blocks — principally lithium disilicate (the family behind e.max), zirconia, and hybrid ceramic materials. These are the same high-strength ceramics used for laboratory crowns and bridges, which is why a well-made same-day crown can match a lab crown for strength. Milling from a solid, pre-formed block is a big part of why the result is reliable.
Where same-day genuinely shines — and where it does not
Same-day CAD/CAM is excellent for single crowns, onlays and many single veneers, especially in the less visible parts of the mouth. It removes the temporary crown, the second appointment and the wait, which is convenient generally and particularly valuable if you are travelling. It is less ideal when:
- High front-tooth aesthetics are needed A skilled technician layering porcelain by hand can still achieve the most lifelike translucency and character for front teeth, which a single milled block may not fully match.
- Large multi-unit cosmetic cases A full smile makeover of many veneers benefits from lab craftsmanship and a staged try-in.
- Complex bites or long bridges These may still be better planned and made in a laboratory.
In other words, same-day is a superb tool for the right restoration, not a universal upgrade. A good clinic chooses same-day where it fits and a laboratory where craftsmanship matters more than speed.
Same-day, milled and printed: how they relate
Same-day CAD/CAM is milling-based, not 3D printing. Printing tends to produce guides, models and temporaries; milling produces the definitive ceramic crown. Both are part of the same digital ecosystem that starts with an intraoral scan and often includes digital smile design for cosmetic planning. Accuracy, fit and adjustment
A common question is whether a machine-made restoration fits as precisely as a hand-crafted one. In practice, a well-calibrated digital scan and mill can produce an excellent marginal fit — how closely the edge of the crown meets the tooth — which is one of the most important factors in a restoration lasting well and resisting decay at the join. The scanner, the software, the mill's maintenance and the operator's skill all feed into that accuracy, so the result reflects the whole setup, not just the concept of "digital". After milling, the dentist still tries the restoration in, checks the bite, and makes fine adjustments before bonding, exactly as with a lab crown. Same-day does not mean rushed: the finishing, staining, glazing and bite check are what turn a milled block into a restoration that feels like your own tooth.
